Hair loss or alopecia is actually a natural phenomenon which is more commonly experienced by older males, in which case it is known as androgenetic alopecia. It is estimated that most individuals lose about 100 strands of hair from the scalp daily; however, there are some instances when hair loss becomes a medical problem. These instances would be: when an individual loses significantly more than the normal amount of hair; when hair loss occurs only on a certain area of the body such as a certain portion of the scalp; when a female experience hair loss on the scalp; or when a male experiences hair loss at an early age.
Hair loss can be caused by a variety of factors such as age, stress, genetics, hormonal changes, certain existing medical conditions or illnesses, diet and others. Aside from these, one of the main factors which cause hair loss is the male hormone called DHT or dihydrotestosterone.
Hair loss can be prevented or treated by improving diet, addressing psychological problems and by taking certain hair loss medications like Propecia, Proscar, Avodart and Rogaine. It is important, however, that before you take any of these medications that you would be discussing your problems with a doctor first so that he could determine which medication would be the safest and the most effective in improving your condition.
Primarily used to treat androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness, Propecia or finasteride works by lowering the level of DHT or dihydrotestosterone in the body. Through this action, hair growth is stimulated and hair loss is prevented.
